It’s the Little Things that Count: Home Gym Stuff!

The big equipment gets all the attention, but there happen to be a lot of other little things that go into it (if you want to overthink it like me):

Getting in: ULTRALOQ smart lock

Fingerprint and code entry on the shed door. No keys to lose, no fumbling in the dark at 6am. We each have a code, and the fingerprint reader is faster than a key ever was.

Safety net: Kidde smart smoke detector

It’s a detached shed full of electronics, so I thought a smoke detector was a good idea. This one’s Ring-enabled, which means if it goes off, the alarm sounds in the main house too. We’d actually hear it.

The cleaning crew: eufy robot vacuum

Gym floors get dusty and dirty. We just turn the eufy on when we leave — it does its thing and docks itself. The floor is clean every time we walk in, and we never think about it.

Knowing it worked: TempPro thermometer/hygrometer

TempPro TempAir digital hygrometer thermometer

We run the heater and fan remotely before workouts, but how do you know it actually worked? This little digital thermometer/hygrometer sits in the shed and tells us the temperature and humidity at a glance. Cheap, and it answers the only question that matters: is it comfortable in there yet?

Barbell storage: wall-mounted hanger

A 7-foot Olympic bar takes up a shocking amount of floor space when it’s leaning in a corner. The wall-mounted hanger gets it completely off the floor and out of the way. In a 16×20 shed, every square foot counts.

Keeping time: Digital wall clock

Rest periods are the easiest thing to stretch when nobody’s watching, so a big visible clock keeps workouts honest. This digital one shows the time, day, and temperature at a glance from anywhere in the shed.

Cold drinks: Mini fridge

Cold water between sets is a small luxury that makes a hot shed workout way more bearable. The little black mini fridge tucks into the corner next to the shoe rack and keeps drinks and ice packs cold.

Clean-up crew: Trash can

Chalk wrappers, torn callus tape, and the occasional protein bar wrapper — it all needs somewhere to go. A small trash can keeps the shed from slowly turning into a mess between cleanings.

Watching the shed: Ring camera

The shed is detached and full of expensive gear, so a Ring camera gives us some peace of mind. We can check on the gym from the house or anywhere else.

A place for everything: storage rack

Bands, ropes, mats, and all the other little accessories used to end up scattered across the floor. Now they live on this wire rack instead — it’s what keeps our strict no-clutter rule alive.

The takeaway

None of these are exciting. All of them get used every single day. If you’re building your own gym shed, budget for the little things alongside the big equipment — they’re what make the space feel finished and effortless instead of improvised.
